Advanced use of Metaphor presented by Dr John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St. Clair

Australian exclusive for 2007

A chance to be trained in NLP by Dr. John Grinder the co-creator of NLP, and Carmen Bostic St. Clairs

Sydney, Australia September, 17th to 21st May 2007

Inspiritive Pty Ltd has tracked down the most wanted couple in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. As a reward they are pleased to offer you an unprecedented opportunity to learn from this five day seminar:

According to Grinder, "All which is not concrete is metaphoric - clearly, this involves the vast majority of our everyday experiences. The relationship which we have with our unconscious is easily the factor most important in our success in life, and is that of metaphor". (From a 1996 interview with Dr John Grinder)

Metaphor is an integral part of the New Code of NLP. It provides a framework for initiating change and developing competencies through stories, activities and examples that have little, on the surface, to do with the matter in hand. This apparent distraction enables us to transmit ideas and invite new associations in mind, which may seem counter-intuitive until they become live experience.

Apart from its extensive history in cultural and mythical stories, and its widespread use in entertainment, metaphor has a function in initiating and maintaining organizational change. Metaphor composition and use is becoming a desirable skill set in change management circles, as organizations discover that not only does its use reduce resistance to change, its implementation can be an extremely engaging and memorable process.

John Grinder and Carmen Bostic have been using metaphor in the corporate arena for many years, both in verbal and non-verbal, or “living metaphor” forms. Their stories of the metaphors they have invented, and the amazing and lasting results achieved, command the listeners’ attention while providing metaphoric instruction in doing something equally worth while.

In this seminar, we shall learn:

  • To design and implement living metaphors - dramatic actions that are so precise and compelling that they require no explanation or framing to have the consequences desired.
  • To compose short verbal metaphors
  • To identify patterns and develop custom metaphors for the individual
  • To apply metaphor in different contexts
  • To use metaphor to by-pass premature questions
  • To discover our own underlying metaphoric beliefs
  • To create more functional underlying metaphors where appropriate
  • To identify patterns on which to develop metaphoric intervention
  • To bring metaphoric change to organizations
  • To apply metaphor in different contexts
  • To use metaphor to facilitate discovery

Who should attend:

  • Anyone with a facilitation or change oriented function, whether coaching, consulting or therapeutic
  • Anyone with a teaching, lecturing or training function
  • Anyone in health care
  • Anyone in business, including sales, human resources or management
  • Anyone in entertainment, particularly those who address their audience
  • Anyone in the arts
  • Anyone teaching or seeking personal development

What is a Metaphor?

Dr John Grinder ImageMetaphor is a description of life patterns, experiences or circumstances which uses unrelated examples to convey the message. Fairy tales, stories, poems and corporate mission statements are well known examples of metaphoric communication.

(Deep Metaphors) are major organising principles that reflect the way that an individual or organisation perceives, lives and responds to their wider world.

Carmen Bostic St. Clair and John Grinder with the participation of the members of the seminar, will address two primary issues:

  • the discovery, examination and replacement or refinement of the deep metaphors normally only glimpsed, yet which govern our lives.
  • the specific strategies which we can use to identify or create the metaphors we need for specific purposes - such as influencing our bosses, spouses and children (assuming they are different) at the unconscious level - an extremely satisfying way of influencing important people in your life.
